Vienna chooses: SPÖ for victory course, FPÖ is fighting for comeback!
On April 27, 2025,Vienna, on April 27, 2025, was elected as the new municipal council and state parliament. The polling stations were open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and around 1.37 million eligible voters had the opportunity to vote. The turnout of the last municipal council election was 65.3 percent, but for today a slightly increasing value is predicted. An important feature of the choice is postal voting: 284,956 election cards have been requested, which is less than five years ago. The postal voting cards are counted on election day and the first extrapolation is expected after 6:00 p.m.
The Greens have set themselves the goal of striving for the new edition of a red-green coalition and securing third place. Christoph Return, the top candidate of the NEOS, is confronted with difficulties because he has switched to the federal government as Minister of Education. At the same time, Heinz-Christian Strache competes with his list “Team HC Strache” in this election, while the KPÖ and the links to move into the local council.
election entitlement and transparency
For the voters justified on this election day, all persons with Austrian citizenship and EU citizens who celebrated their 16th birthday by April 27, 2025 are entitled to vote. The deadline for questions about the election can be obtained from the Vienna City Service at +43 1 4000 - 4001. Information about the number of voters for each apartment has been sent since the beginning of February.
The SPÖ currently rules in 17 of the 23 districts of the city, the ÖVP can be found in 3 and the Greens in 3 districts. The composition of the new municipal council will be crucial for the future political landscape of Vienna.
