FPÖ's surprise victory in the National Council election: What now?
On Sunday there was a surprise in the National Council election when the FPÖ reached first place for the first time. Despite this success, however, the party under its chairman Herbert Kickl could go away empty -handed in the formation of government. All other parties have explained that they do not want to work with the freedom. The FPÖ achieved almost 29 percent of the vote, while the ÖVP came in second place with just over 26 percent. The SPÖ stopped at 21 percent. The NEOs were able to place a good nine percent in front of the Greens, who reached more than eight percent. The remaining parties could not overcome the four percent hurdle.
These results have triggered a political discussion in the country and could significantly influence future government formation. The sharp criticism of the outgoing ÖVP National Councilor Hörl at his own state party causes a stir. His statements throw a clear light on internal conflicts within the ÖVP and could further weaken the party.
The National Council election not only started political changes, but also provided interesting insights into the internal structures of the parties. Further developments in government formation therefore remain exciting because the political landscape is in motion.
