Wien, Österreich - Josef Pröll becomes the new president of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB). The 56-year-old, who worked as a federal party chairman of the ÖVP in the past and as a vice-chancellor and finance minister, was selected by the ÖFB election committee after a three and a half hour meeting in Vienna today. Pröll will be officially elected on May 18 at the Federal General Meeting in Bregenz.
His candidacy was kept secret by Martin Mutz, the chairman of the election committee. In the vote, Pröll received all ten votes from associations and the league, which is a clear signal of trust in his fellow campaigners. Other candidates such as Christian Jauk, Brigitte Annerl and Johannes Wutzlhofer were not elected. However, Wutzlhofer is voted vice of the Supervisory Board, the second deputy provides the league.
Comment by the new president
Pröll was surprised when he found out about the active contact of the election committee. Before his nomination, he wanted to clarify whether he could accept the office. In his first statements, he emphasized the desire for "absolute calm" in the ÖFB to guarantee sporting success. Its primary goals are the strengthening of the unit within the association and the creation of a stable environment for the future.
Before he was appointed ÖFB president, Josef Pröll was Vice President of Vienna Austria from 2011 to 2021 and is currently general director of Leipnik-Lundenburger Invest Beteiligungs AG, which belongs to the Raiffeisen Group. He is considered a suitable candidate because he can bring independence and economic networking into the organization.
career and training
Pröll was born on September 14, 1968 in Stockerau. His school career began in elementary school, followed by the Federal Real Hydics in Hollabrunn. He then studied at the University of Natural Heritage in Vienna, where he acquired a diploma in agricultural economy. After completing his studies, his professional beginnings in the public service began, following various functions in agricultural associations and ministries. Among other things, he became head of the cabinet of Federal Minister Wilhelm Molterer and was a decision -maker in important political offices before finally immersed in the football world.
his success as a politician is reflected in his election as the first ÖFB president, who has not come from the ÖFB Presidium since Friedrich Stickler, who held the office from 2002 to 2008. With the upcoming structural reform in the ÖFB, Pröll's role as chairman of the supervisory board will also be a central topic, since a new CEO is still being sought.
Pröll will not give any further interviews on his future work until the official election on May 18, so our view of his ambitions and the upcoming challenges will remain excited.
