Crisis: ÖVP and FPÖ fall on new low values!
According to the latest developments in Austrian politics, surveys show a significant decline in trust to several parties. According to a survey by the Lazarsfeld Society, which interviews 1,000 Austrians every week, the confidence in the ÖVP significantly decreased. While the SPÖ can still maintain the trust of voters with 30 %, the NEOS values drop from 27 % to 26 % and the FPÖ loses from 26 % to 24 %.
The FPÖ is particularly alarming, where only two thirds of those who would vote for the party show their trust. At 65 %, the FPÖ has the highest distrust of all parties. The ÖVP, which has now fallen by 4 % to 22 %, becomes the least trustworthy party.
trust in federal politicians
A comprehensive analysis of the trust in federal politician in Austria, published on April 11, 2025 by Statista , the falling trust in parties could further explain. This survey illustrates how the population perceives trust in their elected representatives and shows trends and shifts in the perception of trust in politics.
In this context, a survey by the Austrian Gallup Institute states that the desire for political consensus and compromise in the population is strong. In the most recent survey, 73 % of those surveyed stated that they consider compromises in politics as a sign of strength. This is also reflected in the perception of the government parties ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS, who lost trust after the first round of negotiations failed, but were able to regain it when the talks were resumed in February.
Current developments and challenges
The ÖVP was able to raise its trust after the failed coalition attempt from 27 % to 35 %. The SPÖ has also been able to increase its trust from 29 % to 36 % due to the new political situation. The NEOs, on the other hand, had to accept a decrease to 35 % before getting back to 38 %. With regard to the party leaders, Christian Stocker (ÖVP) recorded an increase from 26 % to 33 %, while Andreas Babler (SPÖ) climbed from 32 % to 40 %. Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS) remained stable at 39 %.
Andrea Fronaschütz, head of the Gallup Institute, emphasizes the population's wish for a stable government that fulfills its needs better than possible other constellations. In the current political landscape, the ÖVP (45 %) and the SPÖ (44 %) are attributed to the greatest ability to successfully government, while the NEOs appear boldest with unpopular measures, which corresponds to 44 %.
The SPÖ is particularly valued when it comes to taking care of “people like me”, which confirms 43 % of those surveyed. In addition, the SPÖ is strongest with 46 % of the image of a society worth living. Fronaschütz points out that the social aspect that the SPÖ embodies would be missing in a possible black and blue coalition, which could increase the concerns of voters.
