Trump wants Coca-Cola with sugar cane-the new taste shock!

USA - President Donald Trump has announced that Coca-Cola in the United States could also be produced with sugar cane instead of corn syrup. Trump informed this information about the Truth Social online platform after a conversation with representatives of Coca-Cola. However, it is unclear whether sugar cane will completely replace the maize syrup or whether both sweeteners will exist in parallel on the US market. Coca-Cola was positive about Trump's enthusiasm and announced that it would soon be announced by further details on new innovative offers.

The Mexican variant of Coca-Cola, which is sweetened with sugar cane, is already available in the USA. Since the 1980s, the sugar-containing Coca-Cola drinks in the United States have mostly been sweetened with corn syrup with high fructose content. This sweetener is cheaper, sweeter and has a longer shelf life than other types of sugar. However, maize syrup is criticized: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's Minister of Health, described him as unhealthy.

a turning point in the recipe?

The announcement of Trump could be a significant change in the Coca-Cola recipe. Coca-Cola is known for the basic ingredients of the drink, which include water, sugar and natural aromas such as caffeine, since 1886 as one of the best-kept secrets of the US economy. Only two managers of the company know the entire recipe, and both are contractually obliged to maintain confidentiality. So far, corn syrup (HFCS) has dominated 55% fructose and 45% glucose and is cheaper due to agricultural subsidies.

The discussion about the switch from maize syrup to sugar cane is no coincidence. Maiss syrup has been the focus of health -political debates for years, especially since an increase in the consumption of HFCs correlates with an increase in obesity in the United States. While some expert groups emphasize the increased calorie intake as the main cause of obesity epidemic, corn syrup remains controversial.

market influences and Trump's preferences

A possible changeover to cane sugar already has an impact on the market. According to Trump's announcement, the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company, a large producer of corn syrup, fell by around six percent in post-market US trade. In addition, Trump plans a 30 percent customs on goods from Mexico from August 1, which could increase prices for imported cola. A cola with cane sugar has been available in the US market since 2005 under the name "Mexican Coke" that is sold through the import.

Interestingly, Trump is personally not a fan of the classic Coca-Cola-Dränk and prefers "Diet Coke", which is sweetened with sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfam-K. Amusingly, he even had a “Diet Coke Button” installed in the Oval Office to order his preferred lemonade at the push of a button. In the past, the relationship between Trump and Coca-Cola was not always harmonious. So Trump called up a boycott of the company in 2012.
