Traunsee in danger: Environmental studies reveal alarming facts!

Traunsee, Österreich - Current studies show alarming conditions on Lake Traunsee! Two comprehensive investigations, initiated by the environmental and climate councilor Stefan Kaineder, show the threats to the unique biological diversity of this natural juwel. The first study is devoted to the basic ecological Situation of the water, while the second is taking a detailed analysis of the shore constraints.

The results are clear: almost 53 percent of the bank line are installed, whereby almost a quarter through concrete and stone walls primarily endangered the habitats for fish. This construction significantly endangers the ecological functions of the lake. It is particularly alarming that flat bank sections even have a degree of 78 percent. According to the national water management plan 2021, the Traunsee only shows a moderate ecological state, which does not correspond to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive, as [Salz-tv.at] reports.

growing challenges for the fish fauna

The elevation to the fish fauna has identified important habitats, including gravel flat bank zones and the muzzle areas of the feeder. These areas are of the highest ecological importance for fish population. However, human interventions, such as cross structures, significantly damage these habitats and reduce biodiversity. Kaineder therefore calls for urgent measures to maintain these essential habitats. The latest studies are not only fundamental findings on the ecological situation, but also a call for action in order to cope with the effects of climate change and invasive species such as the Quagga mussel, as already documented [orf.at]

The results of the studies offer a valuable basis for future measures to improve the ecological improvement of the Traunsee and show the urgency to protect the last untouched areas. It remains to be seen which steps the responsible authorities will take to counteract this ecological emergency.
