Traditional cribs in St. Stephen's Cathedral: A look at the Christmas miracle!
Christmas is not only a family of the family, but also an occasion for the impressive crib in the Vienna St. St. Stephen Cathedral. Like Today. In particular, the ancient crib from the 19th century, which was acquired from South Tyrol about 20 years ago, fascinates the guests. It consists of two parts: the child of Jesus and the three kings who are still on the go. Cathedral priest Toni Faber explains that the kings are only added to the Jesus child for the Holy Epiphany, which is celebrated on January 6th.
In addition, there is a simpler variant of the crib in the altar area, which is equipped with a simple feed trough and a wooden figure of Jesus. This is placed in the crib during the midnight mass on Christmas Day. Domp pastor Faber describes the ceremonial process: "I take it off the smallest altar server and put the baby in the crib, kiss it, worship it with frankincense and bend my knee in front of it." A wing altar from the 20th century with a traditional crib can also be admired in St. Stephen's Cathedral. Visitors are invited to pose a mysterious occasion of the Incarnation of God.

The cribs can be seen on the Sunday after the Epiphany Festival on January 12, 2025. Cathedral priest Faber encourages people to experience the impressive Christmas atmosphere in St. Stephen's Cathedral. "The three crib representations invite you to quieten and think about the importance of Christmas," he adds. As blog.berchtesgadener-and.com notes, the tradition of the cribs is an integral part of Christmas usage that brings people together and gives them the opportunity to experience moments of hidden amazement.
