Winter slump in the northern Alps: up to 40 cm of fresh snow expected!
A striking cold front recently pulled across Austria, which means that there are sometimes considerable amounts of snow in the Alps. In the northern Alps in particular, the weather shows its winter side, while in other regions there is only a delicate layer of snow.
On Wednesday morning, the winter season on the Arlberg was properly heralded. Up to 40 centimeters of fresh snow are forecast there, whereby between 10 and 20 centimeters can also fall at altitudes from about 1200 meters. The first amounts of snow have already been reported: in Warth on the Arlberg there was already 24 centimeters, followed by 20 cm in Schröcken and 10 cm in Tannheim.
Different snow conditions in the regions
While the Northern Alps shine in a white glow, things like the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel (Upper and Lower Austria) are rather modest in areas such as the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel. There are only light snow stories to be expected there, and the amount is lower even south of the main Alpine ridge, which shows how different the weather conditions in the various areas are.
With the insertion of the cold front, Wednesday began in many places with rain, while the snow border north of the main Alpine ridge was originally 500 to 700 meters. This border continued to drop during the day, so that there was even snow in sight in deeper locations. The temperatures ranged from 0 to mild 7 degrees on this day, with a constant change between snowfall and sunny phases.
outlook on Thursday and Friday
Thursday often begins sunny, especially in the inner alpine regions and in the south and east. During the day, however, thicker clouds are absorbed, and from noon, slight snowfall begins, which spreads east until evening and also reaches the valleys. The temperatures range between -1 and +6 degrees on this day, which appears quite mild for the season.
A real winter magic also seems to be on Friday when there is still snow on the Alpine Order side and in the southeast in the morning. However, the rainfall will decrease during the day and the sun could be protruded between the clouds. The maximum temperatures are expected to be between -2 and +4 degrees.
Saturday also promises to become interesting in terms of weather. In the early hours of the morning, there can still be some snow showers on the alpine north side, while the south remains drier and sunnier. The sun's rays are also shown here during the day, but a weather front from the west is moving up in the afternoon. There will be a palette of 0 to 6 degrees at temperatures.
Sunday brings a touch of mild air that flows into the higher layers through a southwest wind. On this day, partly over 15 degrees are possible, which in the Alps ensures sunny sections and should delight some ski -traveling people.
The current developments in the weather show that the winter months can still be rich in surprises, and the joy of snowing quantities will play a major role, especially during the winter holidays. More on this can be found in a detailed report on wwwetter.at .
