Winter without snow: Hochstein ski area remains closed-cancellation hell hits gastronomy
in the Tyrolean ski area Hochstein, known for its snowy slopes and excellent conditions for winter athletes, the hotels and restaurants are faced with a huge challenge. The winter that will soon start will take place in Hochstein without skiing and snowboarding, as the ski area remains closed this year. This has already led to a massive wave of cancellations that affect the local economy.
The closure of the ski area is based on an outdated double -eating lift, the necessary parts of which could not be delivered in time. This is explained by Franz Theurl, the chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Lienzer Bergbahnen. He reports that several armchairs have already been removed and security cannot be guaranteed. The ski area businesses in the east of Tyrol have to do without the entire winter season.
massive cancellations and economic concerns
The economic effects are devastating for the catering and hotel industry. Reinhold Tiefenbacher, hotelier from the Hotel Moosalm, describes the situation vividly: "It is a great disaster for us. 80 percent of our hotel guests have already canceled." Margit Stotter from the GRIFELHOF is also concerned. "Before the winter season, this is a hard club that we got over it." The uncertainty regarding the running costs and the future is driven by the operators.
Reinhard Tiefenbacher, senior manager of the 4-star family hotel Moosalm, continues that the accessibility of his hotel is severely restricted without the station wagon. If the number of cancellations does not improve, its family business threatens high monthly losses. In contrast, Peter Csonka, owner of the Schlossberghof, sees the situation a little more relaxed because his hotel is in the valley floor and he has more opportunities to receive guests.
The decision to suspend the winter season in Hochstein came as a surprise to many players. Christoph Stotter, operator of a ski school, speaks of a stressful loss: "They took my existence in one fell swoop." He has invested in equipment that has now become obsolete.
Future view and alternative ski areas
Franz Theurl emphasizes the economic challenges of the company that there have been financial difficulties in recent years. "We don't have the money for winter operation on the Hochstein," said his clear announcement. There are plans for the future, but it is currently clear that the plants have already been taken for this winter.
However, there is also positive news in the region, because the neighboring ski area in Zettersfeld was able to renovate its infrastructure and will possibly offer better conditions for the winter season. While some ski areas are blooming in Tyrol, Hochstein remains with difficult times. Despite the challenges, the Ischgl ski resort can continue to be considered an example of economic success and tourist attraction. In contrast, the insider tip St. Johann, with moderate prices, seems to be an alternative for winter sports enthusiasts in the region. The closure of the Hochstein ski area is not only an economic setback for the local population, but also an indication of the need to invest in the infrastructure of winter sports areas. When asked what the coming months bring, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop, while the gastronomy and hotel industry are under constant pressure, and the winter sports enthusiasts have to look for alternatives.
