Students play for the future: promote climate knowledge through board games!

From March 24th to 26th, 2025, HAK Lienz organized an interactive learning program for class 1a to convey to the students: inside climate knowledge and environmental awareness. The initiative uses the "World Climate Game" board game, which was used for the second time in class. In cooperation with the Lienz Chamber of Labor, the students learn: Inside through the game, as you can act as decision -makers: inside from politics, business and civil society.

In the course of ten game rounds, the participants simulate: inside climate and economic systems and develop a sustainable economic and social order. The game promotes important skills such as cooperation, negotiation skills and empathy. The enthusiasm of the students: inside for this methodology was clearly noticeable and shows how effective playful learning can be.

The context of the World Climate Game

The World Climate Game, which is also part of the global discourse around the climate crisis, is particularly aimed at young people. These often experience fear of the future and feelings of fainting in the face of the impending environmental crisis. The interactive, app-supported board game is based on scientifically sound climate simulations and is presented at various events, including the ingredient Lab at the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Isaga conference. The game comprises ten rounds that simulate a century to develop sustainable social and economic orders, which encourages the participants to understand the complex relationships of a globally networked world.

For teachers, the course for further training at the Tyrol University of Education is a valuable opportunity to expand their skills in teaching about climate change. Training takes place from May 14 to 16, 2025 and are aimed at MINT education actor: Interior and teachers of secondary level I. The aim is to enable the participants: to impart the subject of climate change in a well-founded manner and to implement it through practical experiments and interactive exercises without special materials. mint campus offers a modular online course that enables the participants to learn at their own pace.

outlook for future programs

The HAK Lienz plans to offer the interactive learning program again in 2026. This shows the overarching goal of sensitizing students in the long term to topics that affect our future. The use of games such as the world climate game could be a key to more environmental awareness and informed citizens: inside the future. The combination of practical learning and the promotion of social skills ensures that the participants not only take on knowledge, but also learn to develop solutions together.

The feedback from the current event gives the HAK Lienz further incentive to use innovative teaching methods in order to actively address the challenges of climate change.
