Matrei in Osttirol, Österreich - The financial situation of the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol remains tense. After a debt of over 35 million euros, the municipality is now presenting a new repayment plan to avert the impending bankruptcy. Mayor Raimund Steiner informed over 100 creditors in Lienz about the interest -free, 100 % repayment of all liabilities in the coming years. The majority of those present, over 40 creditors, have already signaled consent to this plan, such as krone.at reported.

The repayment plan divides the creditors into three categories: Up to 50,000 euros, all liabilities should be paid this year, while amounts between 50,000 and 100,000 euros are served by April 2024. For higher claims, payments should be made within the next four years. Matrei is also supported by Land Tyrol, which, as the largest creditor, will pay back 3.7 million euros without interest over 15 years. "This is a real effort," says Steiner, who announced numerous austerity measures to cope with the financial challenges, such as

criticism of the previous leadership

The Tyrolean ÖVP sees itself as criticized because it did not react to the financial problems earlier in the past. The focus is on long -time mayor Andreas Köll and has to defend himself against allegations that his term of office was characterized by oversized infrastructure projects. Despite these setbacks, the municipality is currently able to serve its ongoing obligations and plans to tackle necessary construction projects in the near future.
