New SPÖ boss Philip Wohlgemuth: A new beginning for Tyrol's social democracy
The political landscape in Tyrol has taken a significant turn after Georg Dornauer (SPÖ) announced his resignation as the state party leader and deputy governor. On a Wednesday evening, the state party board of the Tyrolean SPÖ, in a meeting of more than two hours in the party headquarters in Innsbruck, made decisive personnel decisions.
New in the leadership of the Tyrolean Social Democrats will be Philip Wohlgemuth, the managing director of the ÖGB. He was unanimously elected managing chairman and will formally take office on December 19. The expectation is high that it will also be appointed the first deputy governor, which is based on his nomination in the State Party Council, which was made with 100 percent consent.
a fresh start for the Tyrolean SPÖ
Wohlgemuth was pleased to comment on the backing he received on the board and emphasized that the mood was optimistic during the session. However, satisfaction with the last events that last occurred is not high. He emphasized that one had to learn from the past difficulties and want to look "stronger" and united in the future. An important goal will be to ask the Tyrolean population and the party members for their understanding and forgiveness.
Dornauer itself was not present at the session because he had apologized. Nevertheless, Wohlgemuth informed that Dornauer would remain in the state parliament for the time being to temporarily perceive his basic mandate while he is preparing for his professional reorientation. The SPÖ state parliament club had previously decided that Dornauer should not switch to the state parliament because it would like to resign on December 18th.
In the ranks of the SPÖ, there have already been voices that welcome a positive turn with the new beginning under Wohlgemuth. State Councilor René Zumtobel declared his fullest support for the new chairman. He recently described it as "very difficult" and gave the impression that Dornauer's resignation is not regretted.
The upcoming changes in the Tyrolean SPÖ are not only important for the members, but could also influence the political dynamics in the country. A state party conference, the date of which is planned next spring, will decide whether Wohlgemuth is officially elected as the new head of the Tyrolean SPÖ. The upcoming party congress will not be an extraordinary party congress, since Wohlgemuth is preferred.
Selma Yildirim, Member of the National Council, also commented on Dornauer's whereabouts in the state parliament and described this as a "surprise", but remains optimistic that the situation was only temporary. In summary, it can be said that the Tyrolean SPÖ is aiming for a fresh start under Wohlgemuth, which is basically bound to the hope of regaining lost support.
