Animals in armor: VGT campaign reveals the dark sides of the animal industry!
All over Austria can currently be seen striking posters and advertising space with animals in armor. This unusual campaign comes from association against animal fabrics (VGT) . The aim of this Initiative is to draw attention to the poor conditions in the animal industry. VGT managing director Christine Braun emphasizes that millions of chickens, pigs and cattle suffer in Austria's animal factories.
The campaign is directed against the blatant discrepancy between reality in the animal sector and the often idyllic representations in advertising. Every year, over 100 million mast chickens are slaughtered in Austria, many of them suffer from breeding consequences such as painful broken bones. The keeping conditions are also alarming: 75 % of the mast cattle live on hard full columns, and as a result, 92 % of the pigs have inflamed joints in full columns.
insights into the animal industry
The beliefs of animal rights activists are in strong contrast to the practices in the animal industry. Meanwhile, activist Sonja Tonelli reported on a nightly use in which she watched thousands of freshly hatched chicks in a qualmed warehouse. These chicks, which will be so fat in just five weeks that they can hardly stand anymore, are part of a system that is geared towards maximum efficiency.
The recordings that Tonelli and their colleague make in camouflage green document the painful existence of the animals. The picture that shows itself is characterized by an overwhelming impression of suffering and stress in animal husbandry.
global dimension of animal welfare
The discussion about animal welfare is becoming more and more important not only in Austria, but also globally. A report by bpb.de illuminates the far-reaching effects of globalization on Non -human animals. These are considered a big loser in a rapidly changing world. International trade in animals and animal products has increased exponentially since 1980, with the production of eggs and milk more than tripling, while meat production quadrupled.
These developments are primarily due to new technologies, intensification of agriculture and better means of transport. At the international level there are great uncertainties regarding the regulation of animal welfare issues. For example, the fate of shrimp shows how far -reaching the logistical chains are: fishing in the North Sea, processing in Morocco and returning to Europe illustrate the complex relationships.
The demand for animal welfare laws
In the meantime, animal welfare laws are often criticized in many countries because they are unclear and do not offer sufficient handling against the grievances. In Germany, for example, 45 to 50 million male chicks are killed annually because they are considered economically superfluous. This illustrates the urgent need for an international agreement to protect animals that can work over national and regional deficits.A Eurobarometer survey from 2016 showed that 94 % of EU citizens consider the protection of farm animals important. Nevertheless, the demands for improved animal welfare often remain without hearing. Scientists therefore call for universal consensus on animal welfare at the international level and emphasize that compassion for animals also promotes compassion for humans.
The VGT urgently demands more animal welfare and rights for animals to cause a humane turn in agriculture. The poster campaign is a step in this direction because it wants to sensitize society to the grievances that prevail behind the scenes of the animal industry.
