Styria in the upswing: Bio -products inspire consumers again

The demand for organic products in Styria is increasing again, and this is a pleasant turn after two years of stagnating sales. More and more people consciously choose organic food, which is particularly reflected in the sales figures. In the first half of 2024, the organic share of the food trade was already 11.5 percent, an increase compared to the 11 percent in 2023.

The positive development in biomilch and agricultural products such as biomais and biosoja is particularly evident. The demand for organic meat, especially poultry, is also growing. Although the increasing costs influence the pricing for organic products, you work to further promote the upward trend.

direct marketing in organic model regions

To support this development, the Styrian organic farmers rely on direct marketing in so-called organic model regions. In these regions, the proximity to consumers is encouraged and new sales opportunities are created. This not only strengthens the organic farms, but also enables direct care for the population with regional products.

currently there are organic model regions in Graz, in the Vulkanland, in Schilcherland, in Almenland and in Murau. The organic model region Graz has already taken a big step: In autumn 2023 the Bionah Hoftwaden was opened, which is supported by over 80 organic suppliers.

innovative approaches and future developments

Another step towards promoting organic farming is the expansion of organic vegetable advice, which is offered in cooperation with the Chamber of Agriculture. The aim is to promote successful extension strategies and new agricultural methods. Styrian agriculture is aimed at increasing the proportion of organically managed areas from 25 to 30 percent by 2028 in order to further increase market opportunities for organic products.

Styria is already one of the leaders in Europe in organic cultivation. In order to consolidate this position, new funding will be introduced in the "ÖPUPPL" agricultural environment program, which will come into force from January 2025. These are intended to financially support organic farming and create incentives for sustainable practices that have a positive effect on the environment.
