Leoben, Österreich - During New Year's Eve 2024 there was an alarming increase in security incidents in Styria. The reason for the warning: the carefree handling of pyrotechnics led to numerous explosive situations, including injured police officers. The tragic highlight was the incident in Aigen in the Ennstal when a 23-year-old put a firecracker in a glass bottle, which then exploded and seriously injured him. The police balance was also mixed. In Leoben, seven officers were hit by firecrackers and had to be treated with suspicion of bang trauma, one even suffered cuts through parts flying around. In the first few hours of New Year's Day, the Ministry of the Interior found in a broadcast that 21 advertisements were reimbursed for negligent bodily harm and 75 due to property damage by improper use of pyrotechnics. This is an alarming trend, since the securing of pyrotechnics with over 9,100 objects seized have increased by 100 percent compared to the previous year, as Kurier.at reported.

Overall, the security forces counted numerous advertisements, with the intensity of the controls also being held responsible for the increase. In addition, 18 criminal law and ten administrative laws were carried out. The injured officials throughout the Republic were 20, 13 of whom were wounded directly by attacks with pyrotechnic objects. The Directorate General for Public Security confirmed that the suspects are often known and are pursued by criminal law.
