Diversity of photo art: Biennale Photo Graz shows Styrian talents in Leibnitz
In the Styrian city of Leibnitz, a multifaceted insight into the world of photo art is currently being shown. The “Photo Graz” Biennale has opened its gates and presents artistic works that do not fall into the typical categories of travel or leisure photography. Instead, works by artists from Styria are shown who inspire with their unique perspectives.
The current exhibition, which can be seen in the Marenzi gallery in the old cinema, reflects a variety of topics that are characterized by both socio -political and personally. According to Gerhard Gross, the curator of the event, the participants have complete freedom in choosing their topics. "What makes it is the diversity. Accordingly, the additions of a wide variety of kinds are also the participants from different schools, from amateur and professional photography," he explains.
The criteria of photo art
The conditions of participation for the Biennale are clearly defined: single images or series from a maximum of six images are accepted. The requirements for the content are high, the accompanying text must meet the photographs. "Everyone can take pictures, but not every good photo is photo art. That is the difference we want to show," said Gross.
The exhibited work ranges from Nicole Eberl's self-portrait series "My Brain", which shows emotional vulnerability, to gerrit cessation of impressive documentation of water structures. Husung, who is the oldest participant in the Biennale at the age of 92, brings his very own perspective to the exhibition. Jörg Auziger also enriches his tourist photo poses with innovative technology by using KI smartphones from the pictures to enable an undisturbed view of the landscapes.
international perspectives
The "Photo Graz" not only offers a platform for local artists, but also has international dimensions. The cultural mediation of Styria organizes this competition every two years and this year 150 artists from 460 submitted works made the leap into the exhibition. An international jury, which also includes representatives from Germany, Great Britain and Graz, has carefully selected the work. A selection of the works shown will also be presented internationally in the coming year, starting at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Istanbul.
Gerhard Gross emphasizes the importance of such events: "We have a very large photo scene, and in comparison to a very small number of photo -specific exhibition locations. That is why the 'Photo Graz' is also a very important forum to show the work, but also for personal exchange." For more information about this impressive exhibition and the represented artists, there are still many details available, which are read in the current reports by Styria.at can.
