Vienna relies on cycling: 122 new green arrows for safe turn!
Wien, Österreich - Vienna sets new standards for cycling! With the latest expansion of the green arrow system, a total of 654 such traffic signs are now installed in the capital. This emerges from the current communications from the city administration, which were presented on March 21, 2025. In the sixth tranche, 122 new green arrows were added to 83 intersections to enable cyclists to turn or drive straight at red. Mobility Councilor Ulli Sima emphasizes that Vienna is undisputed by the number of green arrows, as far as the number of green arrows is concerned, as reported.
The Brigittenau area becomes the new hotspot for cyclists by installing 18 new green arrows there. The districts of favorites and Ottakring in particular benefit from this measure. Martin Blum, the bicycle traffic officer of Vienna, emphasizes the importance of these new signs and reminds cyclists that they have to carefully pay attention to pedestrians after the stop. All intersections at which a turning or driving straight ahead at red are available on an interactive map that can be found on the website of the City of Vienna.
green arrows on the advance
The implementation of the new traffic sign Grünpeil began in October 2022. This initiative was one of the greatest success of the cycling lobby at the federal level and has significantly accelerated the implementation in Vienna, while other cities such as Graz or Salzburg have only occasionally installed green arrows, such as the Radlobby, which the Stand of the green arrows documented. Vienna took over the clear pioneering role in Austria with over 84% of all green arrows in Austria.
The positive feedback and growing number of cyclists speak for themselves. In 2024, over 11 million cyclists were counted, which represents an increase of five percent compared to the previous year. These statistics make it clear that the investments in the cycling infrastructure - over 250 projects are planned by 2025, which include 100 kilometers of bike paths - while continuing to improve security and accessibility.
