Traditional football game: Sturm legends delight prisoners in Karlau
In a remarkable event that is deeply rooted in the region, the traditional football game between the storm legends and the occupants took place in the Karlau prison. This annual event, which has been taking place for years, ended with a 3: 7 victory for the former professional players, but as always it was less about the result than the community experience.
The match is part of the prisoner sports program, which is active in the warmer months from spring to autumn. Mario Sommer, an employee of the correctional facility and an enthusiastic football fan, organized the game and explained: "The game is a real reward for the inmates for their good behavior." This shows how important such events are for the motivation of the prisoners and how they contribute to the better atmosphere within the institution.
an impressive meeting
The old men's team of the SK Sturm had traveled with a top-class squad, including well-known players such as Günther Neukirchner, Arnold Wetl and Mario Haas. The team was supported by Gerhard Wallner, a long-time masseur of the SK Sturm, which gave coaching tips from the sidelines. The referee role took on another former storm employee with Franz Schuller who led the game with a trained eye.
The dynamics on the field was interesting. While the inmates shone in their dark green jerseys through a lot of effort and readiness, the experienced former professionals rely on their routine and game intelligence. After an exciting first half, in which the storm legends pulled away to 0: 2, the second half became even more gripping. The prisoners not only managed their first goal with a free kick, but also reduced the gap to 2: 4, which significantly loosened up the mood on the square.
Christoph Leitgeb, one of the former storm players, praised the performance of the prisoners: "The prisoners did it very well, they kept it well." These words of recognition show that despite the differences in the experience of both teams, respect for each other was great. Leitgeb and Dominic Pürcher, both of whom were not on the scorer list, are already planning their return for the coming year to improve their chances.
This special event not only strengthens the connection between the players and occupants, but has also developed to an important part of local sports culture. The game offers prisoners a valuable change from everyday life and at the same time promotes the community spirit within the institution.
