Sunday delivery comes to Graz and Linz - what is behind it?
The Austrian Post is planning a significant expansion of its delivery service and will introduce Sunday delivery to the cities of Graz and Linz from the second half of 2025. This was published on May 16, 2025. The decision follows the successful start of Sunday delivery in Vienna, which was introduced in October 2024. This initiative aims to offer customers an additional service in the state capitals, which enables you to deliver cheaper package delivery on Sundays.
Sunday delivery will not apply to all programs. Only packages of online shops that are ready to pay an additional charge will be delivered that day. All other packages must continue to be received from Monday to Saturday. This regulation is intended to serve the demand from customers for more flexible delivery options, but also represents challenges in relation to the working conditions of the deliverers.
increased personnel requirements and criticism
To enable Sunday delivery in Vienna, around 70 new employees have already been hired, which are specially divided for this service. In Graz and Linz, Swiss Post is also looking for deliverers, which indicates an increased personnel requirement. However, there are also considerable concerns about working conditions. Markus Petritsch, chairman of the Straße department at the Vida union, has raised questions about the need for Sunday delivery and warned that the collective agreement for small transports does not cover Sunday work.
The union also criticizes that a public company like the post could build competition with local trading companies. These concerns are reinforced by the different working conditions and the pressure on the deliverers in a changing market.
outlook for other state capitals
The introduction of Sunday delivery in Graz and Linz is only the first step. According to the post office, other state capitals are already being planned, which are also to benefit from this delivery option. This could mean that Sunday delivery becomes an integral part of the Austrian delivery service, depending on acceptance and reactions to the existing criticism.
The coming months will show how this new delivery option will develop and whether the concerns of the union and the changing working conditions in the industry are taken seriously. Further information on this topic can be found at 5min or orf.at.
