Finally finished! Koralmahn shortens travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt
St. Paul im Lavanttal, Österreich - After 26 years of intensive construction work, one of the most important infrastructure projects in Europe, the Koralm Railway, was completed at the end of November. This 130 -kilometer -long railway line, which leads through the Bergmassiv of the Koralpe between Carinthia and Styria, is now facing commissioning. The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) informs that the first phase of commissioning will take several months in which over 70 test drives and around 15,000 test kilometers are carried out before the route is released for regular operation. The maximum speed on this high -speed route is designed at up to 250 km/h, which makes the Koralbahn the fastest railway line in Austria. The construction work was accompanied by various challenges, and numerous test drives with train leaders are planned to ensure the safety and functionality. Particularly noteworthy are the 50 tunnel kilometers and over 100 bridges that shape the route, as well as the 23 modernized train stations and stops, which will also act as important nodes for regional and international traffic.
important milestones and future prospects
The core of the Koralm Railway is the 32.9 kilometer long Koralmt tunnel, which crosses the two federal states of Carinthia and Styria. The Koralmbahn promises a drastic shortening of the travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt from currently three hours to just 45 minutes. This significant time savings will greatly improve the accessibility of the two state capitals, which not only stimulates public transport, but also designs the transport of goods more efficiently and is intended to boost the economic development of the region. The total cost of the project now amounts to around 5.4 billion euros, which underlines the importance of this investment. With a gradual commissioning since the end of 2023, regional connections between St. Paul in the Lavant Valley and Klagenfurt are now being introduced, while the full completion and regular operation of the entire Koralmbahn is aimed for in the end of 2025, as well as wikipedia reported.
