Flowering future: Schools in Graz rely on sustainable environmental projects

Flowering future: Schools in Graz rely on sustainable environmental projects

In Graz, the focus is on environmental protection and education, while various schools and institutions implement innovative projects to promote sustainability. These initiatives are not only important for the learning of the students, but also for the environment, especially for biodiversity in the region.

One of the outstanding projects is the redesign of the school yard of VS Schönau, which took place in March 2024 in cooperation with the association "Natural Schwärmerei" and "Styria Vitalis". An area for a wildflower meadow was delimited around the playground. An observation center enables the students to follow the development of this area. In addition, a vegetable base was created and 12 flower shrubs were planted, for which each class sponsored. This not only creates habitat for insects, but also teach the children the importance of biodiversity for their environment.

pvs Augustinum and the permaculture school garden

At the PPH Augustinum, the school garden is the focus of the “Mint and Mint” project. A diverse permaculture school garden is created here, which enables students to experience global learning, biodiversity and sustainability. For over two years, the students are actively involved in the entire process - from creating the beds to harvesting the products. Workshops on the origin of food round off the educational program.

  • Through this project, the students have the opportunity to experience and learn environmentally friendly nutrition in local and global context.

school projects on the way to climate neutrality

Another exciting project, "Klex Grün", was carried out as part of the sustainability focus "for the earth". This is the development of a school garden and the greening of the shoulder terrace. Teachers: Inside, students: Inside and parent representatives work together to create raised beds and draw a variety of plants, including tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. In addition, the Mediterranean garden is created on the terrace, which promotes learning about plants and their care.

  • This project sensitizes the students for their natural habitats and enables them by learning gardener techniques.

In addition, from April 8th. a sustainability week took place until 14.04.2024, organized by "Oikos", a student organization for sustainability. At various Graz universities, 250 to 300 students took part in workshops, lectures and discussion groups who dealt with numerous topics related to sustainability. The aim of this week was to raise awareness of sustainable action and motivate the participants to implement appropriate behaviors.

  • Through the interdisciplinary approach, this project was able to make a decisive contribution to supporting the city of Graz on its way to climate neutrality.

Overall, these diverse initiatives show how important environmental education and sustainable action are in schools. Not only do they help to sensitize the students to the challenges of the future, but also actively contribute to the protection of the environment.
