Cooking workshops in Graz: New hope for people with depression
cooking workshops are not only of interest in gourmets, but could also be effective support for people with mental illnesses, especially for depression and eating disorders. This is shown by a new study by experts from the MedUni Graz, which was recently published in the journal "Nutrients". The authors, including Sabrina Mörkl, emphasize that culinary medicine combines healthy eating with positive experiences in eating. This could offer a holistic approach to the treatment of mental illnesses.
As a rule, patients who suffer from depression or have eating disorders rely on medication and psychotherapy. However, the researchers have now examined the feasibility of cooking workshops. In five workshops carried out under the guidance of a professional cook and a nutritional therapist, a total of 39 psychiatric patients took part - including 29 with depression and 10 with eating disorders. These participants filled out questionnaires for their eating habits and their mood before and after the workshops.positive results of the workshops
The results were promising. Nine out of ten participants would recommend the workshops. The analysis showed significant improvements in the mood, less sadness, hopelessness and tiredness. It is particularly noteworthy that patients with depression made progress in almost all mood scales, while the sadness of the participants also decreased significantly with eating disorders. These findings were statistically highly significant.
The experts also pointed out that such interventions could also promote sustainable lifestyle changes. These changes could have a long -term positive effects on the physical and mental health of the participants. In summary, the idea is supported in the study that cooking and eating together not only serves food, but can also contribute to improving psychological well -being. Future studies should further research the long -term effects of such programs.
