Gold jackal in Styria: New monitoring shows rapid spread
The return of the gold jackal to Styria is anything but a marginal note. This fascinating animal species, which is also known as Rohrwolf, has successfully settled in our state in recent years. As early as 2022, over 105 evidence of this type was documented, which underlines the far -reaching distribution.
The gold jackal (Canis Aureus), known as a close relative of the wolf, is the only jackal type that occurs in Europe. Data is collected about comprehensive monitoring, which is carried out by Styrian hunters. Wild camera photos and the documentation of cracks help to grasp the spread and behavior of these animals. In cooperation with the University of Graz, even genetic analyzes are created to gain a better understanding of the population.
distribution and measures relevant to nature conservation
The animal species spreads from the Balkans and shows a remarkable adaptability. In addition to fruit, the gold jackal also feeds on sheep and fawns. Last year, twelve sheep were demonstrably torn in Austria, while 35 other animals have been missing since the attack.
Johann Silberschneider, the district hunter in Germany, reports that there were also regular sightings and acoustic perceptions of gold jackals in this district. In almost all districts of Styria, there are opportunities to observe these fetuses. Just last week, an entire family of Goldschakalen was filmed by a hunter in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district.
In addition, the data obtained from DNA samples and photo traps showed that the gold jackal in Styria is not only increasingly widespread, but also successfully testify to young people. This trend development is of great importance, and the exchange with neighboring countries helps to better understand the dynamics of this population.
The gold jackal is listed in Appendix V of the EU directive on protected plants and animals (FFH guideline). This means that hunting can be regulated over national provisions as long as a favorable condition has been proven. In Styria, the hunting season is determined from October 1 to March 15. Since the introduction of this regulation in 2020, 86 copies have already been killed, and the tendency has shown an increasing development.
"Gold jauca chasing as efficient predators in the pack, so it becomes narrow for some species. The targeted hunting can be prevented from being hunting. Especially in the habitats of sensitive species, the hunt intervenes in order to preserve the diversity of species," explains Johann Silberschneider .
