SPÖ remains the strongest force: Vienna City Council election 2025 at a glance!

Wien, Österreich - On April 29, 2025, the preliminary end result of the Vienna City Council election is available. At the election on April 27, a total of 100 seats were filled in the Vienna municipal council, with the SPÖ under Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig defended first place with 268,514 votes and a vote of 39.38 percent. Despite this success, the party had to accept a slight decline in three mandates and now comes to a total of 43 mandates in the municipal council.

The Freedom Party (FPÖ), however, had a gratifying gains and received 138,761 votes, which corresponds to a vote of 20.35 percent and 22 mandates, 14 more than in the last election. Dominik Nepp, the FPÖ top candidate in particular, was praised for this success. In contrast, the People's Party (ÖVP) under Karl Mahrer had to accept considerable losses and now only comes to 10 mandates (-12), with 65,820 votes (9.65 %).

Voter participation and voter structure

The turnout was 62.74 %, which corresponds to 696,345 votes. This is a decline compared to the last election 2020 when the participation was 65.27 %. A total of 1,109,936 Viennese were entitled to vote, although more than a third of those of the eligible age were not allowed to vote due to a lack of Austrian citizenship. However, not Austrian EU citizens were also allowed to take part in the elections of the 23 district representatives taking place, which led to the issue of 284,956 election cards, which were largely counted on election evening.

While the SPÖ and the FPÖ were able to consolidate their positions, the Greens under Judith Pühringer held their result of 2020 with 14.52 % (98,995 votes) and 15 mandates. The NEOS, led by Selma Arapovic, achieved a remarkable double -digit result of 10 % (68,152 votes) and were able to win two mandates, while the KPÖ and the "Links" list with 27,657 votes (4.06 %) miss the move into the municipal council.

The other results show that the Team HC Strache list with 7,533 votes (1.10 %) and the "Social Austria of the Future" (SÖZ) with 5,737 votes (0.84 %) also remain without mandates. Other smaller lists, such as "Heart" and "Pro 23", were also unable to win mandates.
