Rare Fossil on Lake Zollner discovered: 310 million years old!
Dellach im Gailtal, Österreich - Karin Steiner and Martin Oberortner from Dellach in the Gailtal made a remarkable fossil find near the geotrail. The site is at Lake Zollner, where the two explorers discovered a well -preserved lime sponge colony, which is known as Spinctozoa. These fossils come from the carbon ages and are about 310 million years old, such as Gailtal-journal reported.
The importance of the find was confirmed by Fritz Messer, an expert for fossils of the Carnic Alps. Spinctozoen are reef dwellers who were part of reefs that mainly consisted of limestone. Their discovery is particularly noteworthy because these fossils hide in the frequent frequent limes, which makes their sighting extremely rare. The found Spinctozoen measure about 10 cm and are an impressive testimony in the history of the earth.
geopark center Karnische Alpen
The Fossil Fund was brought to the Geoparkentrum Karnische Alpen, which is an important information center for geology and earth history in the region. The Geoparkzentrum opened at certain times: During the pre-season from May 15 to June 28, in the high season in the high season from June 30th and September 11th to October 18th. The opening times vary, the center is accessible to visitors from Thursday to Saturday or Monday to Saturday.

The admission price is € 7 for adults, children and adolescents pay € 4, while students have to pay € 5.
knowledge transfer and offers
The facility also offers a variety of offers for hikers and geologically interested. Information about geological hikes, maps and literary publications on earth history are available to visitors. The geological peculiarities of the region, which were shaped by ice ages, are also part of the information offer. According to another publication ( Geopark Karnische Alpen ), the western Carnic Alps have a lot to offer thanks to their spectacular views and bizarre.
A highlight is also the print of a scale tree that can be seen at the visitor center. This element is reminiscent of the history of the earth and wealth of fossils and rocks in the region.
The discovery of the Spinctozoen and the offer of the Geopark Center underline the importance of the Carnic Alps as an extraordinary goal for those interested in nature and history.
