Cable car employees rejoice: 3.1% more wages from now on!

The collective agreement negotiations for the Austrian cable car industry have been successfully concluded. From July 1, 2025, around 18,000 employees in 250 cable car companies will receive a wage increase of 3.1 percent. This is reported by OTS. The new collective agreement is valid until April 30, 2026 and also includes an increase in the starting salary to 2,138 euros gross per month.

In addition, a Sunday allowance will be introduced for the summer months between May 1st and October 31st. These measures not only secure wages, but also important jobs in Austria's tourist regions. The Chamber of Commerce's negotiating team, led by Andreas Hochwimmer, negotiated in collaboration with the vida union.

Collective bargaining agreement changes and remuneration

The new collective agreement brings significant changes, particularly with regard to the remuneration of employees. According to WKO, the collective agreement applies to all employees and apprentices of the Austrian cable cars, with exceptions for drag lifts and material cable cars. The contract comes into force on May 1, 2024 and is valid for 12 months.

Particularly worth mentioning are the adjustments to remuneration set out in Appendix I of the collective agreement. The apprentice compensation will also be increased: Apprentices in the first year will receive 1,244 euros, while in the fourth year they will receive 2,074 euros gross per month.

The new fees for apprentices are as follows:

year of teaching Monthly salary hourly dare
1st year of training €1,244 €7.19
2nd year of training €1,452 €8.39
3rd year of training €1,659 €9.59
4th year of training €2,074 €11.99

Additional regulations and benefits

In addition to pay, the collective agreement also provides for other benefits for employees. For example, employees who spend the night in the mountain station area receive 39.14 euros per night. In addition, an employee bonus of up to 3,000 euros, tax-free and duty-free, will be provided for 2024.

The regulations on holiday entitlement are also attractive: employees with less than 25 years of service are entitled to 30 working days of holiday, and from 25 years of age it is even 36 working days.

The vida union and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce are confident that the new regulations will contribute to employee satisfaction and continue to stabilize the industry. It remains to be seen how the changes will affect the satisfaction and working conditions of cable car workers, who play an important role in Austria's tourism infrastructure.
