Seewinkel in the dryness struggle: project secures water and salt paints!

in Seewinkel, a Region in Burgenland, the focus is on current efforts to combat the impending shortage of water. Low -watering water derives around 250 kilometers of drainage trenches and lower the groundwater level to make agricultural areas usable. However, these measures have negative effects on the regional wetlands, and current solutions are actively worked on. As part of the “Life Pannonic Salt” project, which is carried out in cooperation with the Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park, the state of Burgenland, the WWF and the Vienna University of Vienna, water management in the region is to be improved. The goal is to maintain the drying out salt paints.

The decline in salt paints has accepted dramatic dimensions, especially in the past 150 years. Currently there are only about 18% of the paint surface of 1858. The lowering of the groundwater level by drainage trenches and water withdrawals, which result from agriculture and municipal groundwater absence fountains, are responsible for this. This also leads to the loss of salt transport to the floor surface and endangers the unique flora and fauna of this region.

Sustainable infrastructures in focus

The strategy to combat these problems includes the conversion of provisional military facilities at Seewinkel Main Canal to permanent facilities. Automatic systems are planned that can be flexibly controlled according to the current weather and water conditions. Eight automatic weirs were originally planned, but alternatives were also considered with four automatic and manually operated systems. The construction of this important infrastructure will be sought for winter or next spring, whereby the approval of the project is to be presented to the competent authority in the summer.

In parallel to the infrastructures, a feasibility study on water management in the Natural area of Seewinkel/Neusiedler See runs. As part of this study, a computer simulation is being developed to illustrate the effects of planned structural measures. According to the first reports, there are already positive effects of the provisional military facilities on the groundwater.

challenges and long -term solutions

The Seewinkel is not the only place that faces challenges in water management. In other regions such as Germany, careful handling of water is also required, especially against the background of climate change and demographic developments. Economic instruments such as prices and fees are crucial for the future of water management. The national water dialogue in Germany deals with the various challenges and solutions to ensure sustainable water management.

The efforts in the Seewinkel are exemplary for the global trend, which aims at maintaining and improving the water resources. Only through innovative approaches and strategic measures can the impending shortage of water be countered effectively.
