Heavy fights in Pokrowsk: Russians continue to move to Ukraine!

Heavy fights and persistent air strikes currently characterize the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian General Staff in Kiev reported that Russian attackers and Ukrainian defenders deliver numerous battles along the front line. A total of 122 offensive actions were recorded in dozens of attacks, with increased use of artillery and air force. 71 directed slide bombs were used here that were thrown on strategic Ukrainian positions.

Particular attention is paid to the city of Pokrowsk in the west of the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. This city, which is an important traffic junction, was now hit by 36 attacks from various thrusts. The situation on site is extremely tense because Pokrowsk has been fought for months and has now been almost completely destroyed. Despite the essential superiority of the Russian armed forces, the Ukrainian defenders have so far succeeded in slowing down the city

Russian troops make progress

However, the Russian armed forces have made progress in the north and south of Pokrowsk, which increases the risk of a possible encirclement of the city. According to reports, the troops push further along the highway to Pokrowsk and have already conquered several villages, including Nowochatskoje, Tolstoy and parts of Zeleni Hay. The central supply route to Pokrowsk is also at risk because Russian artillery and FPV drones are shoting the route.

These developments were flanked by the use of drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. According to reports, the Ukraine intercepted at least 14 drones about Moscow, while the Russian air strikes after visiting the US envoy Keith Kellogg in Kiev paused for a short time, but were quickly resumed. This led to attacks on cities such as Pawlohrad and Odessa, in which a recruitment center in Pjatychatky was hit at Dnipro, which cost at least two people.

In order to withstand the pressure, Ukraine needs continuously support. The US disarmament helper initially supplied 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks, 20 to 22 of whom have now been damaged or destroyed. Australia also plans to send another 49 Abrams tanks to the Ukraine. At the international level, the discussion about the delivery of further samp/t air defense systems between President Selenskyj and the French President Macron is underway, but there are still no concrete results.

The Ukrainian President Selenskyj has once again brought the opportunity to take a ceasefire into play, which has signaled Russia's willingness to talk to. Nevertheless, the challenge remains, since Ukrainian brigades had to withdraw in an orderly manner in order to avoid a circle of Russian forces. Ukraine could have difficulty defending Pokrowsk and myrnohrad if there is no effective counterattack.

The effects of the war not only spread militarily. Institutional cooperations of the Leibniz community with Russia were critically questioned and suspended for the time being. The focus is on the support of endangered scientists and the preservation and reconstruction of scientific structures in Ukraine. Various Leibniz institutes are working on developing perspectives for long-term support and analyzing the consequences of the Ukraine conflict for peace, security policy and international relationships.

The situation in Ukraine remains extremely tense, while both military conflicts and the international reaction are still crucial for the course of the conflict.
