Shocking study: Every fifth student suffers from bullying!

Around 20 % of 15 to 16 year old girls and 23 % of the peers of the same age are regularly affected by bullying, as the current PISA survey shows. These results make it clear that almost every fourth boy and every fifth girl are victims of harassment at least several times a month, which is an alarming sign of the school environment. According to Exxpress.at, a significant part of the pupils is affected by this problem.

The WHO study "Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children" (HBSC) analyzed the situation of students in the school year 2021/22. Boys and girls were interviewed the 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th classes. Between 3 % and 12 % of girls and between 4 % and 13 % of the boys stated that they have been bullied several times in the past few months. It is also worrying that cyberbullying increasingly turns out to be a problem, since it takes place not only at school, but also in digital space.

effects of bullying

bullying is not only a form of violence, but also has far -reaching negative effects on the mental health of adolescents. The risk of mental illnesses is particularly high for those affected. According to an analysis based on the data of the HBSC study of 2022, around 14 % of the students surveyed reported on experiences with school bullying, while around 7 % of cyberbullying experiences reported.

In addition, the OECD's talis study found that 15 % of the school lines observed weekly bullying or verbal attacks among students. These figures show that bullying is a significant health risk in childhood and adolescence, which must be addressed urgently. The rki emphasizes that there is a clear need for effective anti-bobbing-measures.

The WHO found in a recent publication that one of six school -age children has experienced cyberbullying. In particular, boys and girls have gender-specific differences in bullying behavior, whereby boys tend to physical aggression, while girls are increasingly active in cyberbullying. The analysis shows that cyberbullying has increased since 2018, which is perceived by authorities as a serious development. According to Who, the participation in cyberbullying has increased from 11 % to 14 % Value in girls from 7 % to 9 %.

In summary, a worrying image of the bullying situation in schools is created. The need of effective measures to protect and support affected students is becoming increasingly clear in order to promote healthy and safe learning environments.
