New 45 meter high crane in the festival district: construction work started

An impressive crane was erected in the heart of Salzburg and now serves as a new landmark. The 45 meter high crane, which was erected on November 13th, has the distinctive name “Krake”. With its 60 meter long boom, it supports the construction work for the new visitor center and the festival hall's cooling systems. This is another sign that the work in the 2030 festival district has moved into a new phase.

Installing the crane at the front is not only a technical challenge, but also a visual spectacle. The crane table, which sits on two concrete bases, weighs twelve tons and spans a street directly in front of the Sigmundstor (Neutor). The particular challenge during construction was the above-ground power lines of the trolleybus, which had to be routed under the structure.

The logistics behind the implementation

In order to carry out the installations properly, traffic closures were necessary from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on two nights. However, emergency vehicles and public transport were still able to pass through during this time. This approach ensures that construction work runs smoothly while taking into account the most necessary traffic needs.

“The planning began with preparations in August for the erection of the 45 meter high crane from ground level,” explained Thomas Dürnberger, project manager at STRABAG.

Regarding the financial aspects: The construction of the festival center received a generous donation of twelve million euros from the Swiss entrepreneur Hans-Peter Wild. This investment is crucial to advance the project and meet the high requirements.

With these developments, the city of Salzburg aims to increase the attractiveness of the festival district and increase visitor numbers. The entire project could play a significant long-term role in Salzburg's cultural landscape and create the framework for future events.
