New ski jump in Saalfelden: Hope for young ski jumping

The new Nordic ski jumping facility was officially inaugurated on Tuesday in Saalfelden on the Steinernen Sea. ÖSV ski jumper Sara Marita Kramer was pleased with the first jumps, which she described as "really casual". After 14 months of conversion time, the system now shines in new splendor, but the trip there was anything but easy. The renovation costs amounted to around 4.5 million euros, which corresponds almost to a doubling of the originally calculated sum, as Mayor Erich Rohrmoser (SPÖ) explained.

The causes of the enormous increase in costs are diverse. The uncertain budget planning in connection with external factors such as pandemic, rising prices and the war in Ukraine have significantly increased expenses. "The project was suboptimally prepared," admitted Rohrmoser, but was relieved that the jumping system is finally finished. For him, this project was a "matter close to the heart" for the western city region.

A look at the international ski jumping scene

The new facility has already aroused international interest: according to Salzburg24 , also asked teams from Norway and Japan who want to hold training camps in Saalfelden. "Inquiries from Japan show that we have invested in the right direction," said Rohrmoser proudly. Saalfelden is well positioned with the new head design and modern training conditions to establish itself as a leading training location.

The first jumps on the freshly renovated complex were carried out despite adverse weather conditions. Dense swaths of fog made the view difficult, but the ÖSV spokeswoman was able to reaffirm the successful implementation of the test leaps. Sara Marita Kramer, who took part in the first training sessions, felt comfortable in the new environment: "That would even have been enough for a competition," she said with a smile.

past and future of competitions in Saalfelden

A big point of the discussion concerns the potential return of World Cup events to Saalfelden. The mayor carefully remains optimistic, but notes that the decision depends on many factors. "There have already been World Cups in this area. We have to see what the future brings," said Rohrmoser. Project manager Daniel Trixl said more positively, emphasized that the facility was ideal for training purposes and that national and international competitions could take place in Saalfelden. The jumps can reach speeds of up to 85 km/h, whereby the athletes can fly up to 85 meters.

Investments in the new system include comprehensive improvements. Among other things, adjustments to the ski jump profiles were made, modern mat allocation was installed and the entire snowmaking system was renewed. Furthermore, new promotion aids in the form of conveyor belts for the ski jumps K15, K30 and K60 are planned and some coaching accommodations were built.

In the coming weeks, Sara Marita Kramer will continue to train in Saalfelden and Innsbruck before leaving for her first World Cup in Lillehammer in Norway at the end of November. The new facility could therefore prove to be a springboard for many ski jumper and Saalfelden could make a name for itself in the ski jumping community.
