Free public transport in Salzburg: Advent days for stress -free shopping

In a special initiative, the use of public transport in the city of Salzburg is offered free of charge on all four Advent days. This was announced on November 30, 2024, and a high customer volume in the Christmas business is already expected at the first Saturday of Advent.

The Mayor of Salzburg, Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ), explained that this measure aims to support regional retail in the run -up to Christmas. "We would like to offer the city residents and visitors who come to shop or visit the Christkindlmarkt, a stress-free way to cope with the arrival and return trip without having to take care of a search for a parking space," says Auinger.

Details about the action

The free use of public transport includes all bus lines and the S-Bahn lines within the city of Salzburg. Johannes Gfrerer, Managing Director of the Salzburg Transport Association, confirmed that the city will invest around 100,000 euros for this campaign. This initiative could serve as a model for similar actions in the future to promote public transport and to make the city center better accessible during the busy pre -Christmas period.

The decision to offer the use of buses and S-Bahn free of charge is due to the expectation that many people will come to the city to buy gifts and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Experts hope to increase the number of visitors and strengthen local trade.

The support of the city for the regional economy in the Advent season shows the commitment of the local government to improve the quality of life in Salzburg and at the same time to actively address the challenges that retail is faced with. This positive accentuation for sustainability and convenience could also lead to a rethink regarding the use of public transport.
