50 years of Christkindlmarkt: Festival tree from Ebenau lites Salzburg
The 50th Salzburg Christkindlmarkt will receive a special Christmas tree from Ebenau this year. This impressive 70 -year -old spruce measures about 25 meters in height and weighs a proud six tons. It stands in the garden of a private house and is harvested on November 11 by the Salzburg professional fire brigade and the garden office.
The organization that takes care of the construction of the tree has had some challenges. Wolfgang Haider, the chairman of the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, said: "We were important to find a particularly beautiful tree for the anniversary year. However, it was not easy, because there were already eight trees to choose from, which ultimately did not appear optimal." According to Haider, the search for the ideal tree was scarce and not without difficulty.

The entire course of the tree harvest is strictly clocked. At 8 a.m., the companies involved, including the professional fire brigade and the garden office, arrive at the location. A special crane from Schweighofer is provided to safely remove the tree. Here are the steps for transport:

Wolfgang Haider brings his personal connection to the region into play. He used to live in Ebenau and immediately knew that the spruce in the town center was the perfect choice for the Christmas tree. After talks with the Mayor Johannes Fürstaller and the tree owner Josef Schöndorfer, there was a quick agreement. So it was decided to give the spruce the honor of adorning the Salzburg old town market this year.
The Christkindlmarkt has a long tradition and has been organized by the Salzburg association for 25 years. The first tree was still on the chapter square in 1999 and has found its place on Residenzplatz since then. Even in difficult years, such as 2020, when the market was canceled due to the Corona pandemic, the tree was still able to stand on the Residenzplatz.
The harvest and transport of the tree are exciting events that are attentively followed by many Salzburgers. The festive atmosphere and anticipation for the Christmas market make this event particularly valuable for the city and its inhabitants.
