Choice of fate for Salzburg farmers: Who prevails?
Salzburg, Österreich - On February 16, 2025, the Chamber of Agriculture will be in Salzburg, in which around 36,000 farmers and foresters choose their advocacy for the next five years. This choice is not only crucial for the composition of the Chamber of Agriculture, but also has an impact on the local farmers, as Sbg-bauernbund.at . The Salzburg farmers' association goes into the race with a strong list of 166 candidates and has mobilized over 1,000 people who want to stand up for their interests.
The Freedom Farmers hopes from the current situation in which it only holds one of 28 seats in the farmers parliament to make capital and achieve significant gains. The strongest parliamentary group, the ÖVP farmers' association, sees itself under the pressure of the discussion about the challenges of the future. Chamber of Agriculture President Rupert Quehenberger, among other things, mentions climate change, digitization and profitability of the companies as pressing topics. Hannes Költringer from the Freedom Farmers, on the other hand, criticizes the modern bureaucratic hurdles and the pressure through price dictations of food trade, which makes life considerably more difficult for farmers, such as orf.at
important choice in focus
The independent farmers' association also wants to gain a foothold in the election and currently hold three seats. Franz again criticizes the electoral system, which prefers to prefer older voters and thus endanger the future -oriented decisions. The SPÖ farmers, who are currently not represented in the farmers' parliament, nevertheless demonstrate their willingness and compete, while the Greens do without participation. The results of these elections will be crucial for the future orientation and representation of farmers in Salzburg.
