Winter service in Salzburg: 160 employees ready for the first snowfall

The first big winter onset of the year is announced in Salzburg. Tomorrow the temperatures will fall and snow will also be expected into the valleys. In order to be well prepared for these weather -related challenges, the country's winter service is active in full line -up. Around 160 employees are already taking care of winter service to ensure safe transportation on the state roads.

The state of Salzburg has taken precautions to set the course for a smooth winter start. The preparation processes include the adjustment of the clearing vehicles and the assembly of the stray devices on trucks and Unimogs that are required for the scattering and clearing work. According to information from the state administration, over 13,500 tons of road salt are stored, which forms an important raw material base for the entire season. The winter service usually needs about 12,500 tons of this material to clear the streets and prevent ice formation.

winter service in shift operation

The winter service teams work in shift operation to be ready for use around the clock. Simon Altenberger, manager of the state road management, emphasizes that the teams have already been preventive. "In the past few days, measures had to be taken due to colder temperatures and the first snowfall. In September we already had snow in the interior, which served as a dress rehearsal," explains Altenberger.

  • A total of approximately 1,400 kilometers of state roads are managed, the majority of which are in Flachgau.
  • In addition to the 160 actors involved in winter service, over 100 additional forces support that are concerned about various tasks such as the manual snow removal, scattering and technical maintenance.
  • The current material comprises 70 work vehicles, including unimogs with snow plowing, trucks and snow blades.

This year the use of winter service will be particularly crucial, since unexpected weather events often affect road conditions. The emergency services are still optimistic that they can master the challenges. Further details on winter service and the current weather views can be found in the reports on www.salzburg24.at .
