950 years of parish Altenmarkt: a festival of living tradition
A very special event was celebrated in Altenmarkt in Altenmarkt last weekend: the parish celebrated its 950th anniversary. In a festive atmosphere, numerous visitors came to a service that praised the long years of church tradition. According to a gift certificate, the parish was already mentioned in 1074 under the name "Radestatt", whereby Altenmarkt is considered the oldest settlement in the Salzburg Ennstal, which still acts as the parish of the region. The governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) gave a moving speech in which he emphasized the importance of faith for the community. In his opinion, the 950 years of parish life not only represent an award, but are also an obligation for the future. "Altenmarkt is an impressive example of living Christian tradition," says his words.
The historical church of Altenmarkt
The history of the church in Altenmarkt goes far back. The construction of the impressive Gothic basilica began in 1390 and represents an important part of local architecture. A special feature is the "beautiful Madonna", which found its way from Prague to Altenmarkt in 1393. Over the centuries, the church experienced several conversions, especially during the baroque period, and was later attributed to its Gothic style of origin in the 19th century. After the Second World War, baroque style elements were integrated again.
Pastor Josef Hirnsperger proudly commented on the history and connection between the church and the community. "Church and history are closely linked. In Altenmarkt, this rich tradition lives on in an active and lively parish," he said. The celebrations for the anniversary showed the solidarity and pride of the people in their long history.
