KAC defeats Linz and meets Salzburg in the final - everything to the Chl!
The semi-final series of the Win2day Ice Hockey League found an exciting conclusion with a clear victory of the EC-KAC. In the decisive seventh game, the Klagenfurter prevailed 2-0 against the Steinbach Black Wings Linz and thus secured the entry into the final. The goal scorers for the KAC were Raphael Herburger, who scored for the first time in the 38th minute, and Nick Petersen, who increased in the 53rd minute. Despite an additional field player, Linz could not come back in the last few minutes, which secured the second final participation in a row.
The EC-KAC meets its competitors from Salzburg in the final, which reminds of the last season when both teams also competed against each other. This final round begins on Friday in the Heidi Horten-Arena in Klagenfurt. With this victory, the KAC has reached its twelfth final participation since its foundation was founded. The HC Bolzano, which took third place in the Regular Season, can also be happy, because by leaving the Black Wings he has solved a ticket for the upcoming Champions Hockey League season. This means that KAC and Salzburg provide the two best teams from the basic round, while HC Bolzano as the third club from the ICE will compete in the Champions Hockey League.
Champions Hockey League and their meaning
The Champions Hockey League (Chl) is the highest European cup competition for ice hockey teams. The Chl was founded in 2014 after the European Hockey League was discontinued in 2000. The format has changed several times since the first host in the 2014/15 season, in which 44 teams took part. Currently, 24 teams in the 2024/25 season play in a competition format that includes a group phase and a knockout phase.
The basted teams that are qualified from the national leagues secure a place in the round of 16. KAC, Salzburg and HC Bolzano will be represented in the CHL next season 2025/26. Chl's record champion is Frölunda HC from Sweden with four titles, while the ZSC Lions from Switzerland are the title bearers of last season.
Participation in the Champions Hockey League is an important step for the ICE teams and not only conveys sporting ambitions, but also the opportunity to compete on an international level. With the strong defensive work and impressive performance in the playoffs, the Klagenfurter and the Salzburgers laid the foundation in this regard in order to be successful at European level.
The number of spectators in the semi-final game, with 4,403 fans present, shows the enormous interest in the ice hockey games in Austria and the enthusiasm for the final that is imminent. How these teams will be in international competition remains to be seen, but their participation in the Champions Hockey League will certainly cause excitement.
