Pewny demands stopping the abuse: emergency sleeping points for homeless shooters

A heated argument about the use of asylum quarters in Salzburg causes excitement both in politics and in public. On Thursday, social city councilor Andrea Brandner from the SPÖ brought the proposal to provide the currently unused premises of an asylum quarters in the Itzling district over the winter as an emergency sleep for the homeless. This is particularly important in the cold season in which many people need a safe roof over their heads.

The proposal met with massive resistance at Salzburg's State Councilor Christian Pewny from the FPÖ. He described the idea as an attempt by the SPÖ to enforce their own "asylum alarm on the back of the population" and pointed out that the existing accommodations were already sufficient. Pewny also expressed concerns about the possible abuse of emergency sleeping points: "Winter apartments for homeless people may not be abused for people from all over the world," he said on Friday.

Pewny: Clear rejection and concerns

pewny believes that it is time to stop the abuse of existing offers. He announced intensively to check who exactly the emergency sleeping agencies and emphasized the country's responsibility to proceed decisively against abuse. "The FPÖ will not exist," he clarified, making a strong veto against Brand's proposal. He emphasized that the space for homeless people should be reserved without creating new asylum quarters.

The reaction of city councilor Brandner followed promptly. She was amazed at Pewny’s "contradictory statements". Just a day earlier, Pewny had initially indicated to check the proposal. "His attitude does not always seem to be clear to him," remarked Brandner and Insisted that there must be an objective dialogue about the use of the empty building. After all, the state of Salzburg bears around 25,000 euros per month for the building, which makes the discussion about meaningful use all the more valuable.

The situation in the asylum district

The dispute over the use of the asylum quarters in Itzling is part of a broader debate about the distribution of resources in the city and the support of helpful groups, especially homeless people. Brandner sees the empty quarters as a potential solution for the winter emergency of homeless people, a necessity that is particularly noticeable in the cold season. The dispute between the political parties shows how different the perspectives on the problem of asylum and homelessness are within the city administration.
