Huge vertebrae for retirement age: Mahrer demands discussion with resistance!
In the course of a current discussion about retirement provision, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Harald Mahrer, recently expressed his views to increase the retirement age during an interview on OE24. Mahrer sees this as a way to cope with the pension problem in the long term and called for a rapid implementation of the measures provided for in the government program that are intended to cover complex aspects of the pension system. However, these statements did not come without resistance; Both SPÖ and FPÖ criticize Mahrer sharply for his suggestions. [OE24]
Mahrer emphasized that the discussion about the statutory retirement age and the special conditions for early retirement were urgently required. In the political debate, opinions rank widely, whereby the FPÖ interpreted its views as part of a ÖVP initiative to raise the retirement age. In particular, the FPÖ social spokeswoman Dagmar Belakovich described the claim as disrespect against older workers, while the FPÖ general secretary Michael Schledlitz spoke of an affront.
claims for raising the retirement age
The chairwoman of the retirement security commission, Christine Mayrhuber, asked to gradually increase the age of pension from 65 to 67 years. This demand met with violent criticism from other political actors, including the FPÖ, SPÖ, the SPÖ-related pensioner association, the Austrian Trade Union Confederation (ÖGB) and the Chamber of Labor (AK). The Greens, on the other hand, see scope at the effective starting age, while NEOS and Young Industry are a comprehensive reform of the pension system.
Despite the various points of view, the increase in pension expenses is a central topic that is in the context of demographic developments in Austria. According to experts, a year later in a pension could reduce the payments by 3.5 to 4 billion euros.
government program and savings
The new triple coalition in Austria, which was praised this morning, presents a government program that provides for savings in the pension system. A total of 1.45 billion euros are to be saved by 2028, and even 2.9 billion euros by 2031. These savings could contribute to budget relief at short notice, but long -term financial sustainability remains questionable. [Ecoaustria]
A planned access to the corridor pension is made more difficult by increasing the minimum starting age from 62 to 63 years and the necessary insurance years from 40 to 42. Such measures could contribute to the short -term reduction in pension expenses, but this is done at the expense of accessibility for many employees. Ecoaustria therefore calls for a more comprehensive reform with the introduction of a sustainability mechanism that should come into force from 2035 in order to be able to better control pension expenses.
