Rescue in need: Horse from Graben recovered in Oberneuland!

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, the Large Animal Rescue department of the Bremen-Blockland volunteer fire brigade in Oberneuland, Bremen, was alerted for their first assignment. A concerned caller informed the fire brigade about an "animal in an emergency" at around 4 p.m. When the emergency services arrived, the horse was invalidated and found in a threatening situation.

A veterinarian was already on site and calmed the horse before the firefighters started rescue. These put on straps and loops in order to free the animal from its predicament as gently as possible. With the help of a telescopic loader made available by a farmer, the horse was carefully pulled up.

successful rescue and handover

After a successful rescue, the horse was handed over to the owner and the vet. According to reports, the condition of the animal is stable after use and it is fine again. The Bremen fire brigade has gained extensive experiences in the rescue of large animals through the newly founded large animal rescue department. The block countries firefighters have undergone special additional training in order to be able to act competently in such critical situations.

The large animal rescue department, which has only been officially on duty since mid -May 2025, plays an important role in coping with animal rescue operations in the region. The need for such specialized rescue teams is growing, as can be observed in other countries. In Great Britain, for example, the Barta (British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association) has been active since the early 1990s, which has emerged from the fire and emergency services in order to be able to react better to animal rescue situations.

growing relevance of the large animal rescue

As reported, the topic of large animal rescue is becoming increasingly important, especially in Germany, where awareness of this grew only slowly until a few years ago. Since 2015, Lutz has been committed to sensitizing fire brigades and rescue organizations to missions. Training for rescue workers, veterinarian and riders has now become an integral part of the annual training plan for many fire brigades.

The successful intervention of the specialist group in Bremen shows how essential qualified staff and the right equipment are in an emergency. The Bremen fire brigade is committed to this important task and is ready to continue animal rescues in the future.
