Police on the upswing: record number of applications and new hires!

The police reform in Austria picks up speed: Interior Minister Gerhard Karner makes headlines with news about the staff. Despite a strict savings budget, 2500 new applicants are to be included in the ranks of the police this year. According to the Krone , around 400 new police officers were hired in March. The Interior Ministry now has a total of 40,393 employees, 32,619 of which are active in the executive service. This means a record value, since 4410 police officers have already been trained in the past two years.

recruitation measure shows effect

A look behind the scenes shows a massive increase in the interest in the police profession: Since the adjustments to the admission procedure in July 2023, the number of applications has almost tripled. With 3,226 applications for training in December 2023, this interest represents a highlight, such as bmi.gv.at . In addition, 607 new police students started their training in September 2023 and the interest is also increased by measures such as higher salaries and the offer to get the driver's license during the training.

However, there are also restrictions: In order to meet the financial requirements of the new budget provisory, overtime was limited to the Viennese police. However, the security of the citizens should not be endangered - this is clearly emphasized by the Ministry of the Interior. The focus remains on the preservation and expansion of the executive, even if savings of 15 percent of the factual expenditure are required throughout the ministry. Overall, the Budget of the Ministry of the Interior comprises around 4.6 billion euros for 2024, with the majority of flowing in personnel costs.

The successes of this reform already show the first fruits: the staff in the police has increased continuously in recent years. For comparison: in 2015 there were 27,900 employees, and the number of police officers is now more than 32,000. This development is to be seen as a positive sign of security in Austria, while steps are taken to increase the attractiveness of the police profession.
