Omega-3: This is how your biological age remains at bay!
An exciting new study by the University of Zurich could provide the key to slowing down aging! According to the publication in the journal Nature Aging , the daily intake of a gram of omega-3 fatty acids has significantly slowed up to four months. The subjects who were all older than 70 years took either omega-3, vitamin D, a placebo or different combinations of both as well as a regular movement program.
The positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids, which mainly occur in fat fish such as salmon and vegetable sources such as linseed and walnuts, was particularly evident in combination with vitamin D and sporting activity. Thanks to the use of epigenetic watches , which have to show chemical changes in the DNA, the UZH researchers were able to demonstrate that the aging process in the participating Omega-3 fatty acids consumed, slower. Particularly noteworthy: the observed effect occurred independently of gender, age and body mass index.

The investigation also found that the combination of omega-3, vitamin D and regular exercise increased the slowdown of biological age. Participants who combined these three factors showed the best results. However, the researchers also had to point out that too high doses of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins can be harmful to health. The scientists therefore recommend that these nutrients only be used as dietary supplements as required.
These groundbreaking results open up new perspectives in age research and could possibly be a strategy for promoting healthy aging. Future studies are intended to clarify which specific metabolic processes are responsible for the positive effects of omega-3 fatty acids and whether these results also apply to other populations. What is certain is: the knowledge from the Do-Health-Study could be the key to a longer and healthier life!
