ÖVP plans minority government: What does that mean for Austria?

Austria faces a political turn: In an exclusive interview with Puls 24, the EU MP Lukas Mandl from the ÖVP brought the idea of a minority government into play. He sees the possibility of a government between the ÖVP and the NEOS as an alternative to the current government situation. Mandl emphasizes that one has to think in alternatives and mentions that both the SPÖ and the Greens, and possibly also the freedom of such a government could be. He criticizes FP boss Herbert Kickl, since he offers more with a government formation mandate than just express claims, as reported on puls24.at.

breakdown of the coalition talks

In the meantime, the NEOS party broke off the trilateral coalition talks with the ÖVP and the SPÖ. Party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger informed Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Friday as well as the leading politicians of the SPÖ and the Federal President that their party would no longer take part in the talks. This withdrawal raises serious doubts about Nehammer's ability to form a new coalition government after the ÖVP could not achieve a majority in the last election in September and remained behind the FPÖ. According to Meinl-Reisinger, there was a lack of a willing reforms during the talks, indicating the budget holes of the previous government, which significantly burdened the dialogue, according to the analysis of DW.com.

If the negotiations between the ÖVP and the SPÖ are continued, it remains to be seen, or whether there are new elections. At the same time, a survey shows that the FPÖ, which became the strongest party in the last elections with around 29 % of the vote, gains further approval, which could significantly change the political situation in Austria.
