Austria's largest roof photovoltaic system starts in Zurndorf!

On the roof of the XXXLutz central warehouse in Zurndorf, not only the largest photovoltaic system is being created in Austria, but also one of the largest roof photovoltaic systems in Europe. Burgenland Energie and the company Püspök have jointly decided to significantly expand the existing roof system. With a new total volume of around 20 megawatts, the system will generate more than 20 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. For this purpose, around 35,000 PV modules are installed on a roof area of around 200,000 m², whereby the existing system is enlarged by 25,000 modules, as ots.at reports.

This ambitious project is part of the overarching strategy to make Burgenland climate -neutral and energy -independent by 2030. Burgenland Energie AG, as an important actor in the area of renewable energies, has a comprehensive portfolio of photovoltaic and wind power projects with a total output of around 2,000 megawatts. This capacity corresponds to about 20% of the capacity currently installed in Austria for solar and wind energy. The investment volume for these projects is an estimated 1.5 billion euros.

funding and financing

The financing of the project is supported by a partnership with several banks, including the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg and Erste Bank. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has already signed contracts for the largest financing of green-energy-related projects in Austria. A total of around 200 million euros of equity and around 500 million euros of debt were planned by the end of 2026 as part of this cooperation. This support is without liability of the owners, the repayment is ensured by future cash flows.

Governor Hans Peter Doskozil emphasizes the importance of this project for the future climate neutrality and energy security of Burgenland. According to CEO Stephan Sharma, the project should not only reduce the dependence on fossil fuels, but also create numerous new jobs. According to estimates, around 12,000 new jobs could arise, and CO2 savings of around seven million tons are also forecast.

regional resources and advantages

Burgenland presents itself as one of the most wind and sunniest federal states in Austria with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, which makes the potential usable for solar thermal energy. Exact information shows that hydropower continues to be the largest proportion of renewable energies in Austria, but solar energy and wind power contribute around 25% to regenerative energy generation. This illustrates the urgency and need to invest in the expansion of renewable energies in order to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Information on the global trends and the current state of renewable energies show that the expansion in many countries is being promoted to reject climate-damaging energy sources, as Statista.com.

With the "XXXL for Tomorrow" program, XXXLutz also pursues ambitious sustainability goals that fit seamlessly into the vision of regional actors and strengthen the overall project. The increasing number of innovative companies that deal with renewable energies reflects the positive development and awareness of the need for an energy transition.
