Austria U21 celebrates narrow 1-0 win against Latvia in Wr. Neustadt!

Austria's U21 national team in the test game on June 6, 2025 in Wr. Neustadt won 1-0 against Latvia. The squad supervised by coach Peter Perchtold celebrated his second victory under his direction after he was able to conquer Switzerland 2-0. Moritz Wels scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute when he benefited from a defensive error of the Latvian team.

The first half, however, showed a rather lackluster performance of the Austrians, which suffers from large parts of the first 45 minutes Falta of ideas and dynamics. The best chances for Austria had Tim Trummer, who in the 39th and 43rd minute each ended. On the part of the Latvian team, Glebs Patika had a dangerous shot in the 23rd minute in the first round, which ÖFB goalie Matteo Bignetti was able to successfully ward off.

game course and tactical changes

After the change of sides, Austria was improved, but it remained exciting: the Lettlanders had a great opportunity in the 56th minute to give the best chance in the game when Emils Evelons did not have the necessary success in front of the goal. Despite the superiority in game shares and possession of the ball, Austria was unable to convert the large number of opportunities into clear hits.

morris Wels' goal scored the late phase of the game and gave the U21 team the deserved victory. "We played well, but we still have to work on creativity," said Perchtold after the game.

preparation for the EM qualification

The next test game is already on Tuesday when Austria competes against Hungary at 6:00 p.m., which will be transferred live to ORF Sport. In addition, the European Championship qualification begins in September, and the coaching team is optimistic about the possibilities of selecting a wide pool of talented players. The latest additions to the squad are Jannik Schuster, Nikolaus Wurmbrand and Leon Grgic, who come from the U19 national team to the U21, and goalie Christian Zawieschitzky, who is moving out of the U18 team.

The WAC striker Erik Kojzek continues to fail because there are ambiguities about his FIFA game authorization and citizenship. Trainer Perchtold emphasized the high level of willingness of his players and the need to form a closed team, which will be decisive for the challenges.
