Austria invests 480 million euros in e-mobility by 2026!
In Austria, the mobility turnaround will be promoted with a comprehensive funding program, for which a total of around 480 million euros will be made available by the end of 2026. As vienna.at , the focus of these investments is to expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. In particular, the creation of a comprehensive availability of quick load points is of central importance to promote switching to e-mobility.
Available currently over 27,000 public loading points for electric vehicles in Austria are available, with the majority of these points classified as "normal charging points". The goal of the federal government is that 95 percent of Austrians can reach a fast loading point within a radius of ten kilometers by 2030. At the moment, however, this radius is still 15 kilometers.
funding opportunities and specific investments
Transport Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) explained that around 30 million euros are available for improving the charging infrastructure for 2026, while in 2025 these subsidies are not yet used. In the previous year, a total of 249 charging stations were built with a budget of 10 million euros. In addition, around 240 million euros are scheduled for the changeover of local public transport (public transport), while switching to electrically operated trucks is supported with almost 140 million euros. Individual E vehicles, such as e-mopeds and electric motorcycles, benefit from a total of 70 million euros in grants.
The "Emove Austria" program, which the Austrian federal government presents, aims to create the prerequisites for broad acceptance of electromobility. The focus is on four essential columns: the expansion of the public charging infrastructure (icharge), the promotion of emission-free bus fleets (EBUS), the support in switching to electric trucks (Etruck) and the creation of incentives for private and company electric vehicles (ERIDE). According to Today.at , the mobility program for the years 2025 and 2026 includes a total of 480 million euros, which should flow particularly in quick charging stations.
goals for electromobility in Austria
with more than 225,000 approved electric cars, including 25,000 new registrations in 2025, there is a growing acceptance of electromobility. However, the proportion of private cars among electric vehicles has so far remained low. Nevertheless, Hanke emphasized that the range of suitable infrastructure is crucial for the willingness of the population to switch to e-mobility.
A comprehensive goal of the ministry is to contribute to climate neutrality in Austria by 2040. For this purpose, not only the charging infrastructure should be expanded, but also reforms to accelerate the construction of charging stations on motorways. In addition, an online platform is set up, which is intended to provide a transparent overview of the development of the charging infrastructure, as also described in the initiatives of
