Austria in 22nd place in the press freedom index: Neos demands more courage!

Österreich - Today, on May 2, 2025, Austria made significant progress in the press freedom index of Reporter Without Borders and is now taking the 22nd place. NEOS describes this improvement as encouraging, but emphasizes that there is even further need for action. The party's media show, Henrike Brandstötter, makes it clear how important it is to sustainably secure Austria's media location and to strengthen independent journalism.

A stronger policy for the media

In her appeal, Brandstötter calls for a detourth in the Austrian Radio (ORF) and its independence from political influences. Neos also demands a public tender for the new occupation of the ORF bodies. These measures are intended to create the basis for a more transparent media landscape. The Federal Government has known itself in the government program for strengthening independent media and combating disinformation.

growing importance of media literacy

Brandstötter emphasizes the importance of media literacy in schools and adult education and sees this as a necessary prerequisite for a defensive democracy. NEOS also plans support for media startups to promote media-specific innovations. Another goal is a closer cooperation between ORF and private media houses to strengthen Austria's media location.

global challenges of freedom of the press

Norway takes first place, followed by Estonia as well as the Netherlands and Sweden. Germany has moved back to 11th place, which is considered "satisfactory", but there are challenges such as the endangerment of journalists who report on right -wing extremist milieus, as well as high hurdles in reporting on the Middle East conflict.

In countries like the USA, an increasingly press -free climate can be observed, reinforced by cuts in financial aids. The importance of an independent journalism that is under pressure in many regions of the world remains essential, with Mexico the most dangerous country for journalists.

The report makes it clear that the situation of freedom of the press is a critical topic and requires urgent measures. The difference between the ranking lists shows the need to fight both nationally and internationally for free and safe journalistic work. The challenges for journalism are diverse and are influenced by framework conditions, education and political commitment.

In the future, it is crucial to continue this dialogue and promote the importance of media freedom. Neos' initiatives to strengthen this area are a first but not sufficient step to tackle the challenges of journalism in Austria and worldwide
