ÖFB-Zoff: Players demand reforms-who has power in the association?
After tumultuous developments in the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB), Wolfgang Bartosch took up his office as interim president on Friday. The 66-year-old lawyer announced that despite internal opponents such as Tyrol Josef Geisler and Upper Austria Gerhard Götschhofer, who hinted at legal steps against his election, decided to work on the reform of the association. Bartosch said: "I look forward to Götschhofer's announced complaint", "and emphasized his support in the Presidium. The structural reform and the search for a new CEO are at the top of its agenda, with a planned time frame by the end of March 2025 for the final resolution.
conflict between players and officials
In the meantime,a conflict within the ÖFB is bubbling. Stars like David Alaba and Marcel Sabitzer have practiced public criticism of the officials and demand changes in the association. Alaba turned to the ÖFB leadership in an email to request a personal meeting after the termination was decided by managing director Bernhard Neuhold. Rangnick and the team see a key person in Neuhold for the development of the national team because he efficiently uses the resources for sporting success. According to Wiener Zeitung , the players have the feeling that their voices are not taken seriously, and push for more professionalism: "We question actions", says Sabitzer.
In a heated exchange between the team council and the officials, the players had to recognize that the internal power struggles paralyze the team. Rangnick turned against the decision of the officials: "We are not a student team," complained the players internally. President Klaus Mitterdorfer's resignation further tightened the situation. It is now unclear how the future leadership of the ÖFB is designed and whether the players are actually able to enforce the necessary reform to give the association a more professional face.
