Tchibo: Sustainable coffee for a better future in Austria

Vienna. The latest coffee facts from Tchibo show that the taste of buying coffee for 78.2 % of Austrians is the decisive criterion. To ensure the highest quality, Tchibo receives around 80 % of its coffee from 75,000 small farmers from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Vietnam and Brazil. In cooperation with the independent organization Enveritas, Tchibo is actively committed to supporting these farmers. The aim is to obtain 100 % of the coffee containers from responsible purchase by 2027.

"Coffee has been part of our DNA for 75 years," explains Paul Unterluggauer, Managing Director of Tchibo. "In order to ensure the best coffee quality in the future, we will implement measures along the entire supply chain." The company is not only involved in the countries of origin, but also during transport, roasting, retail and recycling packaging.

sustainability as a corporate philosophy

Tchibo has been a pioneer in the field of sustainability for almost two decades. One of the ambitious objectives is to make the entire CO2-neutral supply chain by 2035. In addition, all packaging should be recyclable by 2025.

There are also innovative approaches: Customers can already buy unpacked coffee in around 100 branches in Austria. Tchibo has established itself as the largest provider of unpacked coffee. For the popular coffee to go, the company relies on reusable solutions and has expanded the Myciseecup deposit system in Salzburg since 2024. "Sustainability is not just a marketing tool; it has been part of our business for almost 20 years," says Unterluggauer with emphasis.

A central component of the sustainability strategy is initiatives such as the "re-use campaign". In 120 Tchibo branches, customers can hand over well-preserved textiles that are brought back into the cycle via Re-Ferus Austria. In addition, Tchibo has been committed to the use of 100 % sustainably produced cotton since 2022 and supports Indian cotton plantations on their way to sustainable cultivation.

expansion on the market

Tchibo can look back on the market for 75 years of success and has been working in Austria for 55 years. With 120 branches, over 5,000 shelves in food retail and strong online sales, the company is firmly anchored in everyday life for many Austrians. The latest new openings in cities such as Gmunden and Tulln have already been realized, and there are other projects.

A special highlight is the planned 65 m² shop-in-shop in Vöcklabruck, which is considered a showcase project. "Our shop in the supermarket offers the usual feel -good atmosphere that our customers appreciate," says Unterluggauer and highlights the importance of the customer experience.

The comprehensive efforts of Tchibo for quality and sustainability prove that the company not only fulfills the tastes of its customers, but also actively works on a more environmentally friendly future. These developments are particularly important because they influence both consumption habits and the sustainability standards in the coffee industry.
