Goldwörth: How the Weinzierl family masters pumpkin cultivation
In picturesque Goldwörth, nestled in the Danube Valley, Andrea and Franz Weinzierl have specialized in the art of pumpkin cultivation. With the help of the climatic changes of recent years, they are using the conditions of their “cloud farm” to grow and process high-quality pumpkins.
The Weinzierls have been running the business since 2005, after they took it over from Franz's parents. Originally run as a conventional arable farm, they discovered oil pumpkin as an additional source of income over a decade ago. “We were looking for new possibilities and the oil pumpkin seemed ideal to us,” says Franz Weinzierl.
Special growing conditions
Pumpkin growing conditions are crucial. According to the Weinzierls, sufficient soil moisture is essential during the sowing period, although waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. They also warn that morning frosts are an absolute no-go for the tender plants. During the flowering period, however, sunny weather is crucial. “Good insect flight for pollination is important for the healthy development of plants,” they add.
Another advantage of the oil pumpkin is its robustness against dry phases, which makes it an easy-care crop. Depending on the weather, the Weinzierls harvest their pumpkins from their six-hectare fields between mid-September and mid-October. The harvest time window varies depending on the maturity of the kernels - the more optimally ripe the kernel is, the better the quality of the harvest.
Regional products for culinary delights
As part of their farm-gate sales, the Weinzierls offer a selection of homemade delicacies, including pumpkin seed pesto and dried pumpkin seeds. Their special highlight is the pumpkin seed oil, which they have pressed in the region, more precisely in Krenglbach in the Wels-Land district. "Regionalism is very important to us. We also source our bottles and labels from Upper Austria," emphasize the Weinzierls.
To celebrate their connection to the region, they have organized a raffle in collaboration with Tips to win two bottles of the delicious pumpkin seed oil. They not only want to present their products, but also strengthen appreciation for local agriculture and regional food.
